Before I Ever Touch the Caseback

The first thing I do with any unfamiliar watch is hold it to my ear and close my eyes. It’s the oldest, most analog form of diagnosis there is — no app, no equipment, no opened caseback. Just sound. I learned this habit slowly, over about four years of buying watches I couldn’t fully evaluate before handing over money. Estate sales, flea markets, a few anxious eBay pickups. The ear is faster than any other tool I own, and it’s always with me. That said, it has limits I’ve learned the hard way, and I’ll be honest about those too.

This post is about what I actually listen for, in the order I listen for it, and what those sounds have saved me — or cost me — over the years.

What I Hear First: Beat Rate and What It Tells Me

The most immediate thing a watch communicates is its beat rate. Beat rate is measured in beats per hour — bph — and each “tick” you hear is actually one beat. Most mechanical watches run at 18,000, 21,600, or 28,800 bph. A small number of high-beat movements run at 36,000 bph, though those are rarer in my collection.

At 18,000 bph, you get five ticks per second. Older vintage calibers — think 1950s and 1960s movements — often run here. The tick is slow, deliberate, almost meditative. There’s a clear pause between each beat. It sounds authoritative, like a grandfather clock in miniature. When I pick up a watch from that era, this is exactly what I expect to hear.

At 21,600 bph, you get six ticks per second. This is the middle ground — common in watches from the late 1960s through the 1980s. The beat sounds noticeably quicker but still distinct. You can still count individual ticks if you concentrate.

At 28,800 bph, the eight ticks per second produce what I can only describe as a smooth hum. Individual beats blur together into something almost continuous. Modern movements — ETA 2824, Sellita SW200, many Rolex calibers — live here. The sound feels urgent, almost anxious compared to a vintage 18,000. Neither is better. They’re just different conversations.

Quartz is entirely different and instantly recognizable: one sharp click per second, perfectly metronomic. No warmth, no variation. I find it useful to know immediately whether I’m holding a mechanical or quartz movement before I go any further.

The Omega I Diagnosed at an Estate Sale

Three years ago, I paid $210 for an early-1960s Omega Seamaster at an estate sale in northern Vermont. The seller knew it was an Omega. She did not know whether it ran. I held it to my ear for about thirty seconds before deciding.

What I heard was an 18,000 bph beat — slow, vintage, correct for that era. That was the good news. However, the beat wasn’t perfectly even. There was a slight lurch, a subtle gallop on every third or fourth tick, as though the movement was briefly hesitating. I recognized that. Specifically, it suggested the watch either needed regulation, or the balance wheel had been exposed to a magnetic field at some point. Magnetization is one of the most common problems in vintage watches and one of the easiest to fix.

I bought it. Had it demagnetized and regulated by my watchmaker for $65. It now runs within plus-three seconds per day. The total investment — $275 — for a caliber 550 Omega Seamaster that, in that condition, would sell for considerably more. I made that call with my ear before I’d confirmed the reference number.
