Shimmer vs. Sheen: They Are Not the Same Thing

This distinction trips up a lot of newcomers, and I completely understand why. Both terms sound decorative. Both produce visually interesting results on the page. However, they describe fundamentally different physical phenomena, and they behave very differently inside your pen.

Shimmer inks contain actual suspended metallic or mica particles. These are physical solids floating in the ink solution. When light hits the dried page, those particles reflect it back — giving you that glittering, almost three-dimensional look. Brands like Diamine Shimmertastic and Robert Oster’s shimmer range are well-known examples. The particles are typically fine, but they are still particles, and they will settle in your ink bottle, your converter, and your feed channel if you let the pen sit unused.

Sheen inks, by contrast, are particle-free. The sheen effect is optical — a thin-film interference phenomenon that occurs as the ink dries. Certain dye concentrations, combined with the right paper surface, produce a secondary color at the ink’s edge or in pooled areas. Pilot Iroshizuku inks are famous for their sheening behavior. A dark blue ink might sheen red or gold. There are no solids involved. As a result, sheen inks are far gentler on your pen’s internal components, even when they produce a similarly dramatic visual effect.

What Shimmer Ink Actually Does Inside Your Pen

Here is where I have to be direct with you, because the pen community sometimes soft-pedals this. Shimmer inks can and do cause problems in certain pens. The risk level depends on your nib size, your feed design, your pen’s material, and how frequently you write with it. Let me break this down from real experience.

The mica particles in shimmer ink settle quickly when the pen is uncapped and sitting still. In a broad or stub nib — say, a 1.1mm or 1.5mm stub — the wider channel allows particles to flow relatively freely. In my experience, a medium or fine nib is where you start seeing issues. I once loaded a Lamy Safari with a fine steel nib full of Diamine Blue Lightning. After three days of not writing with it, the nib dried with visible sparkle crust around the tipping material. Getting it fully clean took two 30-minute soaks in cool water and a full bulb syringe flush. The pen was fine ultimately, but I was annoyed at myself.

Vintage pens and pens with rubber sacs are a separate concern. Metallic particles can accelerate wear on older rubber and latex components. Specifically, I would never put shimmer ink in my Pelikan 400NN or any pen with a delicate vacuum or lever fill mechanism. The risk simply is not worth the visual payoff. That said, modern cartridge-converter pens with steel nibs are generally more tolerant — provided you flush them every two to three weeks without fail.
