The Desk Arrived on a Tuesday

My grandmother’s writing desk came down from her attic in three pieces, wrapped in moving blankets that smelled like cedar and old wool. I had expected the desk itself. What I had not expected was the shallow center drawer, still locked, and the small brass key taped to the underside of the lid with a strip of brown packing tape that had gone completely brittle. That tape was probably forty years old on its own. When I finally got the drawer open — gently, with a flat-head screwdriver nudging the swollen wood — I found a rubber-banded bundle of letters. Forty-one of them, as I counted later. Written between 1951 and 1959. The question of old letters ink paper aging had never felt so immediate or so personal.

I sat on the floor of my spare room for about two hours that afternoon, just reading. My grandmother had kept a correspondence with her sister in Bristol throughout the 1950s. The handwriting was small and precise. The stamps were still bright in places. And the ink — some of it anyway — was as dark and legible as if she had written those words last week.

Some of it, however, was not.

What I Found When I Looked Closely at Old Letters, Ink, Paper Aging in Real Time

I spread the letters out on my kitchen table in rough chronological order. The earliest ones — 1951 through about 1954 — were written on a heavier, slightly cream-colored paper with a faint laid texture I recognized immediately as a rag or cotton-content sheet. The later letters, post-1956 or so, shifted to something thinner and brighter white in its original intention, the kind of paper that goes into cheap office use.

The difference between those two paper types, seventy years on, was not subtle. The rag-content sheets had mellowed to a warm ivory. There was minimal foxing — those reddish-brown spots caused by mold or metal impurities reacting with moisture over decades. The paper was still supple at the fold lines, not brittle. I could open each letter fully without fear of cracking it along the crease.

The wood-pulp sheets had not fared so well. Several had yellowed to a deep amber at the edges, a process called acidic degradation. Lignin, the organic polymer that gives wood its structure, breaks down over time and releases acidic compounds that attack the cellulose fibers. The paper becomes brittle, discolored, and eventually self-destructs. Two of the later letters had small tears at the folds I hadn’t caused. The paper had simply given up at its weakest points.

The Ink Was a Whole Separate Story

On the rag-content letters, the ink was largely beautiful. Dark, resolved lines with almost no visible fade. My best guess, based on the depth of color and the way some strokes had a faint reddish-brown undertone when held to the light, is that my grandmother used an iron gall ink — the same chemistry that scribes used for centuries, that monks used for illuminated manuscripts. Iron gall works by a chemical reaction: iron sulfate and tannic acid combine in the presence of water to form a compound that bonds directly to cellulose fibers. It does not sit on top of the paper. It becomes part of it. Seventy years later, that bond holds.

Some of the Bristol letters, written by my great-aunt, told a different story. Specifically, two from around 1957 were ghostly. I could make out perhaps sixty percent of the text; the rest had faded to pale gray wisps. The ink had been a dye-based formulation, almost certainly — the kind of quick-drying, water-soluble ink that many postwar commercial cartridge systems used. Dye molecules don’t bond to fiber. They sit in suspension, vulnerable to UV light, humidity fluctuation, and simple time. Seventy years of all three had done its work.

I photographed everything before I touched anything else. That felt important.

What I Got Wrong at First

My first instinct was to flatten some of the more rolled letters with a heavy book. That was a mistake I caught before I made it, fortunately. Compressed storage of aged paper without proper humidity control can cause new fold lines and stress fractures. Instead I laid the letters flat in a single layer inside acid-free archival folders — the kind used by conservators, with a pH above 7.0. I had a few on hand from a previous project involving some 1940s watch catalogs. If I hadn’t, I would have left the letters as-is until I could source proper materials.

The mistake I actually made was subtler. I handled several letters without cotton gloves in the first sitting. Skin oils transfer to paper and accelerate acidic degradation at the contact points. I knew this in theory. In the moment, sitting on the floor reading my grandmother’s handwriting, I forgot completely. As a result, I’ll now need to be more careful about how those particular letters are stored going forward.

Knowing something intellectually and remembering it when emotion is involved are two different things.

What the Chemistry Actually Tells Us

Spending an afternoon with those letters made me think seriously about what I write with and what I write on now. I’ve been a fountain pen user for about a decade, and I test a lot of inks — probably thirty to forty different formulations per year at this point. But I had been choosing inks primarily for their behavior on the page: flow, shading, sheen, dry time. Longevity was an afterthought.

It shouldn’t be. Iron gall inks survive because of that cellulose bond. Carbon-based inks — the kind used in many pigmented or archival ink formulations — survive because carbon particles are chemically inert and physically stable. They don’t react with light or mild humidity the way organic dye molecules do. In my experience, well-formulated carbon inks also resist water brilliantly, which matters for anything stored in variable conditions.

The tradeoff with iron gall, worth knowing honestly: the same acidity that helps it bond to fiber can, over very long periods or in high-acid paper environments, contribute to paper degradation at the writing line. Archivists call this “ink corrosion.” On rag paper with good buffering, it’s minimal over a human timescale. On cheap acidic paper, it compounds the problem.

This is why paper matters as much as ink. The two are in a relationship.

What I Think About When I Write Letters Now

I write letters. Not as many as I should, but I write them — probably six to ten per month, with a couple of pens I rotate through depending on mood and nib character. Since finding my grandmother’s correspondence, I think differently about the whole activity.

Cotton or rag-content paper — meaning at least 25 percent cotton fiber, ideally more — is what I reach for when the letter matters. It costs more per sheet than wood-pulp paper. Sometimes significantly more. That feels like a reasonable price for something meant to outlast me. Paper labeled “acid-free” is a start, but it’s not the whole picture; truly archival paper is both acid-free and alkaline-buffered, with a pH of around 8.0 to 8.5, which provides a reserve against future acidic exposure.

For ink, I’ve become much more deliberate. Iron gall and pigmented carbon formulations are what I use when permanence matters. Dye-based inks — however beautiful, however perfectly shaded — are for practice pages and notes I don’t expect to outlast a decade.

Storage conditions are the third leg of this. UV light degrades both ink and paper. Humidity above roughly 55 percent encourages the mold that causes foxing. Fluctuating temperature causes materials to expand and contract, stressing paper fibers and ink bonds over time. A cool, dry, dark drawer is not a romantic archive — but it is why some of my grandmother’s letters survived intact when others did not.

The Quiet Argument That Analog Writing Makes

I keep coming back to the question of why this all matters — why old letters, ink, paper aging over seventy years should feel like an argument for anything. My grandmother wasn’t writing for posterity. She was writing to her sister about children, recipes, a difficult neighbor, the price of wool. Ordinary things. She had no expectation that I would read these words in a spare room sixty-some years later.

But I did read them. The medium made that possible. A digital file from 1995 is already frequently inaccessible — wrong format, failed hard drive, discontinued platform. A well-written letter on good cotton paper, sealed in a drawer, travels across decades without any infrastructure at all. It requires no software. No power. No backward compatibility negotiation.

That is not a small thing. That is, in my view, the quiet and serious argument that analog writing has been making all along — that the old letters, ink, paper aging gracefully or not, are proof that permanence is still possible if you choose the right materials and keep them out of the light.

My grandmother did not make a perfect archival choice with every letter she wrote. Neither do I. However, some of what she chose survived beautifully, and because of that, I know her voice. I know how she described a Sunday afternoon in 1953. I know she worried about the same things people worry about now.

That seems worth writing carefully for.
